Karkloof Canopy Tour

Karkloof Canopy Tours
Activity Type: Adventure & Adrenaline Location: Howick, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal

Based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the Karkloof Canopy Tour has been built in a spectacular valley of the mistbelt podacarpus Karkloof Forest Reserve. The Karkloof Canopy Tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a ‘Kitting up’ session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment are put on and checked for safety. A short scenic 4×4 drive to the top of the Karkloof valley and it is time to monkey around! From the start on the launch platform a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable to the first platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a safety guide to ensure your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and all offer different views of the surrounding forest, a magnificent 20m waterfall, clear sparkling forest stream and across the expansive Karkloof valley far below. Spend a couple of minutes relaxing on the platforms while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest – pointing out different trees and the magnificent giant ferns way below. The bird life is incredible. This includes the opportunity of spotting Emerald Cuckoos, Knysna Turaco, a wide variety of raptors and if you are lucky, the elusive Narina Trogon or endangered Cape Parrots. The forest is also home to a variety of mammals, but it is the loud calls and fearsome tree swinging of the Samango monkeys that you will remember best. The Karkloof Canopy Tour consists of 12 platforms and 10 zip-line slides, the longest of which is 200m! A tour lasts approximately two hours, this is a safe, fun adventure for people between the ages of 6 and 80+ and includes refreshments during the tour. Tours run at specific time slots. Bookings essential. The consumption of alcohol before a Canopy Tour is not permitted for obvious safety reasons!

Kosi Aquarium Snorkeling Adventure

Safari and Surf
Activity Type: Scuba Diving, Free Diving and Snorkeling Location: Kosi Bay Suburb, Kosi Bay, KwaZulu Natal

At Kosi bay mouth the quality of your snorkeling experience hugely depends on snorkeling at the exact correct tide to avoid strong currents and to have the best visibility that the day will offer. If snorkeling at Kosi bay mouth on the wrong tide the water will be green as the water will be flowing out of the system to the ocean. If snorkeling when the tide is pushing too hard, the current will be too strong to snorkel comfortably. Our guides will arrange to meet you at the perfectly ideal time to give you the best Snorkeling conditions that the given day will offer. We often refer to our snorkeling tours at Kosi bay mouth as an experience "snorkeling with dragons". As experienced guides, not many destinations keep us as entertained and amazed as Kosi bay mouth! We always see something totally unexpected, sightings that can very easily be overlooked by the non experienced eye.. Highlights include ghost and double-ended pipefish, stone and scorpion fish, flutemouth, blue pete, zigzag sand wrasse, honeycomb rays, morey eels, lionfish, whitespotted rockcod, jumping bean, dusky cherub, emperor angelfish, queen coris, crescent-tail wrasse, bluebarred parrotfish, piano blenny, grunter, river snapper and lots more! On average our marine guides will point out about 80 - 100 different species of fish! Our Snorkeling guide will meet you in the Kosi bay mouth parking area. From here you will be guided to our briefing area where you will be given a pre-briefing and given our "snorkel plan". Our guide will hand you a set of high quality snorkeling gear and give you a couple of basic tips to increase your enjoyment with the equipment in the water. After the briefing our guide will go introduce you to the magical underwater beauty of Kosi bay mouth! We suggest that you follow him and look at what he is pointing out as his experience in the water will increase your sightings hugely.. After your time in the water you will return with your guide to the briefing area for a lovely cup of coffee/ tea or hot chocolate whilst identifying all your sightings in our fish id books.
